How to tell a genuine profile from one that is not

The tells are consistent, and none of them require you to be suspicious of everyone.

Fake profiles on matrimonial sites are not rare, and they are rarely crude. The good ones look better than real profiles, which is itself the first tell.

Here is what actually distinguishes them.

The photograph is too good, and there is only one

A single professionally lit picture, no casual photos, no family in any of them. Real people have a bad photo from a cousin's wedding. Reverse image search takes ten seconds and catches most of it.

The details are impressive and unverifiable

A senior position at a large company with no location. Foreign education with no specific institution. Property mentioned in general terms. Every impressive claim and not one that could be checked.

Genuine profiles are usually more specific and less flattering.

They move you off the platform quickly

Within a few messages: get on WhatsApp, get on Telegram, here is my number. There is always a reason — the app is inconvenient, they are travelling.

The reason is that platforms keep records and personal chat does not.

There is urgency that does not fit

A family that has been looking for two years suddenly needs an answer this week. Someone returning abroad shortly. A visa timeline. Urgency is the oldest tool there is, because it stops people checking things.

Money appears, eventually

Not at first. It arrives after warmth has been built, and it always comes with a story that makes refusing feel unkind: a customs charge on a gift, a medical emergency, a temporarily frozen account.

No genuine prospective match will ever need money from you before you have met. There is no exception to this. If money is mentioned, it is a fraud, however convincing the story around it.

Video calls never happen

There is always a reason. A broken camera, poor network, modesty, a family rule. One postponement is ordinary. Three is an answer.

What to do instead of worrying

Ask for a video call early. Five minutes. Genuine families find this completely normal.

Ask something only a real person would know. Not a test — a specific question about their city, their work, their college. Vague answers to specific questions are the clearest signal there is.

Tell someone. The single strongest protection is that another person knows who you are talking to. Fraud depends on isolation.

Trust the flicker. Almost everyone who has been defrauded describes a moment early on when something felt slightly off, and they talked themselves out of it. That moment is usually right.

What good verification looks like

Ask the service what "verified" actually means. If it means a phone number was confirmed, that stops nobody — numbers cost a hundred rupees.

Verification worth the name involves a real person checking a real government ID against a real face, and it is the reason a service can say with any confidence that the people on it exist.
